EMCO Software Releases an Improved Version of MSI Package Builder Tool

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- February 13, 2012 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, has announced today the availability of a new version of the MSI Package Builder tool targeted at creation of MSI installation packages for the Windows platform. Version 4.5 includes new features that help network administrators and IT professionals to create MSI packages for Windows x86 and x64 platforms. Also, the new version allows MSI authors to specify advanced actions that will be automatically executed before and after the MSI installation and uninstallation.

Windows-based MSI packages are platform-dependent and can be generated either for the x86 or x64 platform. Packages generated for the x86 platform can be deployed on both Windows x86 and x64 OS's. Packages generated for the x64 platform can be deployed on the Windows x64 OS only. MSI Package Builder 4.5 includes an option that allows selecting a target platform for the generated MSI; thus MSI authors can generate an MSI package for either the x86 or x64 platform depending on their needs using the same installation project.

EMCO Software Introduces a New Freeware Tool for Auditing Installed Software in Microsoft Networks

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- November 30, 2011 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, announced the release of a new EMCO Network Software Scanner freeware tool for Windows. This tool is designed to help network administrators and IT professionals to audit software installed on Windows computers in their organizations. It allows extracting software inventory information from all remote PCs connected to a local network into a centralized software inventory database. Using Network Software Scanner, the IT staff can check the list of installed programs and updates on every PC and export the required inventory data to a file.

EMCO Releases a New Version of WakeOnLan Tool with Enterprise-Level Features

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- August 22, 2011 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, announced today a new release of the EMCO WakeOnLan utility targeted at providing new features for corporate networks. Both free and professional versions of the WakeOnLan utility for Windows help network administrators to turn on network computers remotely using the Wake-on-LAN technology. Version 1.1 extends the functionality of the professional version by offering an option of a quick automatic extraction of MAC addresses for all network computers and providing a better integration with the Active Directory.

A network packet used to wake up a PC remotely using the Wake-on-LAN technology includes the PC's MAC address as a unique identifier. MAC addresses can be extracted automatically from network PCs when they are turned on, but for large networks it can take a while for all MAC addresses to be collected. The new feature introduced in version 1.1 allows extracting MAC addresses for all network PCs regardless of their current state from Microsoft DHCP. Even for large networks, this process can only take several seconds.

"Automatic MAC addresses extraction from Microsoft DHCP server brings the WakeOnLan utility to a new level. Our corporate customers who have tens of thousands of computers in their networks can complete Wake-on-LAN preparation steps including MAC addresses collection within only a few minutes. Another new feature available in the professional version of WakeOnLan 1.1 is an option to define target PCs for Wake-on-LAN tasks using an Active Directory query. This query extracts a list of PCs from the Active Directory based on predefined conditions. It is possible to execute the Wake-on-LAN operation for all PCs in a particular Organization Unit in a domain, for computers with certain names, etc. It is also possible to use complex conditions and define queries through a visual editor.

"This feature is very useful for scheduled Wake-on-LAN tasks. It helps network administrators to define a condition once and then execute the task for the always up-to-date set of PCs, which are managed through the Active Directory", Emil Thor Jonsson, CTO at EMCO Software said. EMCO Announces a New Freeware to Access the Command Prompt on Network PCs

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- June 22, 2011 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, announced the release of a new EMCO Remote Console freeware utility. This Windows utility with a graphic user interface allows network administrators and other IT staff to obtain access to the command-line prompt on Windows computers located in local networks. Remote Console can be used to run processes and execute Windows commands on remote computers. Consoles that access remote computers provide a set of features similar to the local command-line prompt.

Remote Console is a utility with a graphic user interface that provides access to network computers. It can scan a local network to detect available computers and display them on the screen. A network administrator can select a PC to connect to and open an interactive command-line prompt. Access to remote computers requires administrative permissions, whereas it's possible to specify different credentials to access different domains, workgroups and computers.

Network administrators can open multiple consoles for the same PC or different PCs and execute Windows commands and processes remotely. Such interaction with a remote computer is performed in the background and doesn't interrupt the remote user's session. Every opened console is represented on the screen as a separate tab and offers typical features available in a local command-line session, such as interruption of the current task, re-execution of previously entered commands, etc.

EMCO Releases a Free MAC Address Scanner Utility for Windows

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- June 17, 2011 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, announced availability of a new freeware utility for network administrators. The new tool from EMCO called MAC Address Scanner has been created for the Windows platform and designed to help administrators and IT staff to detect network card MAC addresses of computers available in a local network.

A MAC address is a unique identifier of the network card assigned to the device by its manufacturer. This address is used for some network operations to identify the target computer. For example, Wake-on-LAN tools generate a wake-up network packet using MAC addresses of the target PCs, so administrators have to specify the MAC address before initiating the operation. This address can be extracted locally, but there is a lack of solutions that can help to collect MAC addresses from network computers into a centralized database.

The free MAC Address Scanner utility is designed to help administrators to extract MAC addresses from remote PCs. It is created as a Windows utility with a graphic user interface that allows scanning available network computers and extracting MAC address information remotely. Collected information can be exported to a file and used by external tools such as Wake-on-LAN and other utilities that require MAC address input.

"MAC addresses detection for remote computers is one of frequent routine tasks for network administrators that usually take more time than expected. Usually, administrators have to write scripts to perform this task, but that approach can fail for some configurations. The Leading Installation Repackaging Technology from EMCO Has Got a New Release

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- September 30, 2010 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, announced today a new release of EMCO MSI Package Builder tool. The new version of the application improves the installation changes capturing process and allows administrators to prevent changes performed by running applications and processes from appearing in the capturing results and the generated MSI package. It enhances the leading installation repackaging technology used in MSI Package Builder and helps administrators to filter out unwanted changes very easily.

Installation repackagers, used to convert executable Windows software installations into the silent MSI format in order to distribute and deploy them remotely, traditionally use file system and registry snapshots made before and after the installation to compare them and detect installation changes. This approach is good to detect changes, but with Windows running multiple processes in parallel, it fails to detect the processes that initiated those changes. MSI packages generated using this approach may include changes that have nothing to do with the captured installation. The approach used in the MSI package builder ensures more accurate results, because it allows associating detected changes with the processes they were initiated by, so it's really easy to filter out unwanted changes.

The new version of MSI Package Builder allows not only filtering out unwanted changes from capturing results, but also preventing such changes from appearing during installation monitoring. The application displays the list of currently running applications and system processes before the start of monitoring to allow network administrators to select applications and processes changes initiated by which should be excluded from capturing. This feature significantly simplifies post-processing of captured data.

They can see all applications and processes that are currently active and decide if their changes should be filtered out or not. New Notification Features are Available in EMCO Remote Shutdown 4.1

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- April 14, 2010 -- EMCO Software, a provider of software solutions for computer network management, announced today the availability of a new version of the Remote Shutdown utility used for PC-power management in Windows networks. Version 4.1 allows network administrators to send text notifications to network computers. This feature can be used to notify users about planned power management actions or share important information. A notification is displayed in a standard window with the text entered by the Remote Shutdown operator. Users may close this window after reading. Also, the new version of Remote Shutdown allows locking and unlocking computers across the network.

Another new feature available in Remote Shutdown 4.1 is an option to receive e-mail notifications about completed tasks. If this option is enabled, system administrators don't need to open the application in order to check statuses for executed tasks. In this case, Remote Shutdown will send e-mail notifications to specified addresses. Such notifications include information on the executed task and the execution status for every network computer where the task has been executed. Network administrators can specify global settings to be used for all tasks and override the settings for particular tasks, if required.
